15 Copywriting Tips For Social Media Marketers To Craft An Effective Post.

June 14th, 2019 by Elvis Paul

I’ma give you Copywriting tips that you can use to write a high converting ad copy for your promotional social media posts.

I know how difficult it is to promote anything and get sales in this noisy internet. Seems like everyone is shouting too loud, but no one is willing to listen. Ughhh…

But with an effective ad copy and a marketing strategy, you can gravitate people’s attention, and essentially turn them into customers.

Just remember; it’s not as easy as “Biz Gurus” make it sound.

The mindset you need in order to make it work

You need to understand that it takes time to even start seeing decent results. You have to keep on learning, split testing and experimenting because this industry is so volatile, but for a good reason. If it was easy everyone would be doing it and it wouldn’t work for anyone.

If you are willing to learn and grow, you will have an edge over those who aren’t. You know what? Majority of the people give up within 6 months and if you are not one of those, you will succeed in achieving the desired outcome.

Check out this cheesy and sarcastic Tweet from 2017, Lolz!

My insatiable curiosity to learn has made me an invincible person, if you ever try to bring me down, you'll make a fool of yourself. Nah, I'm not bragging, I'm just telling you a fact.

— Elvis Paul (@ElvisPauliGen) December 30, 2017

I want you to engrave the following statement in your mind:

People can only give you tips, tricks, hacks, and ideas. No one is gonna hand you a blueprint, step by step guide or a road map to success, the ones who claim to do that most likely have shady motives.

— Elvis Paul (@ElvisPauliGen) March 20, 2019

What I’m giving you here are just a few tips that could help make your journey a little bit easier.

In this blog post, I’m specifically talking about promotional social media posts, it could be a Facebook post, Instagram post or a Tweet.

1. Have a killer hook

People’s attention span is decreasing day by day, you have less time to capture their attention and retain it. If your hook is not intriguing enough, they’re not gonna read the whole thing.

Especially the first few lines in your post should draw people’s attention and create a desire to keep on reading.

2. Use clickbait titles

I know clickbait is the most annoying thing on the internet, but you gotta clickbait people in order to get your point across. If your title is not crazy, people will ignore it, that’s the nature of the internet.

Just make sure you are not using too misleading titles that could get you in trouble.

3. The post must be short and thought-out

No one has time to read a lengthy post by a stranger, so cut the BS and make it as short as possible. Try not to use long sentences ‘cause most people on social media don’t like to put a strain on their brain, they are just there to have fun and see what’s happening in the world.

Here are a few practices to make your ad copy shorter

A. Use contractions properly to trim the length of your paragraph without losing your context.

B. Don’t be repetitive, I mean structure your ad copy in a way that you don’t have to repeat the same words and points too many times.

C. Speak the language that your target demographic is familiar with, for example, if your ideal customers are young adults, let’s say 18 to 24 years old, they are inclined to resonate with informal language, so use modern-day slang, idioms, and ideology that involves recent events.

Here’s an example of how you can change your language in order to relate with your target audience on a deeper level.

Trying to appeal to 45-54 years old

“Contact me for more information, sir.”

Trying to appeal to 18-24 years old

“Hit me up for more info fam!”

Same message, just the language is different. Hope you got it.

4. The post must be skim-readable

It’s crucial for your post to be skim readable or in other words scannable.

Do you know what’s so intimidating on social media?

A lengthy paragraph which has no space, no punctuation, no line brakes, and no sub-headings. It’s a real pain to read that kind of post because people like to get an idea of what’s it about before they decide to read.

Proper subheadings and space between paragraphs make it easy to quickly get an idea of what you are addressing in your post and also quickly scroll through and find what they are looking for.

Avoid using extremely rare terms that might confuse people. If you really wanna use rare terms, give a short description of it in your post to make it easy for people to understand your point.

5. Attach an eye-catching image or a video

You know we all love visuals, especially young adults. An attractive image or a thumbnail on a video is gonna make people give another glance at your post, and hopefully, read it.

Videos and images are statistically proven to perform a lot better compared to just boring text.

The image or video must be about what you are offering. E.g. If your post is about an Italian restaurant, you can attach an image of a Pizza.

Throwback to my old Tweet:

There's nothing more powerful than a sales pitch in a video form in digital marketing space.

— Elvis Paul (@ElvisPauliGen) February 15, 2018

6. Position yourself as an authority

The vast majority of people don’t buy unless they know, like and trust you. It is so important to position yourself as an authority. Don’t come off as a new player in the game ‘cause people won’t trust you. Most importantly portray yourself as an expert.

One of the ways you can demonstrate your authority is by mentioning your greatest achievements and avoid excessive bragging ‘cause it will annoy people and they’ll be quick to label you as a narcist.

I cannot stress enough how important positioning and pre-selling is in marketing.

— Elvis Paul (@ElvisPauliGen) December 28, 2018

7. Make it about them and convey the value

We all love to talk about how great we are, the sad truth is; no one gives a damn! People only care about their benefits, so make your ad copy about them, not you.

The first question that comes to people’s mind when you pitch your offer is; what’s in it for me? So, articulate what’s in it for them in the easiest way possible. Don’t use fancy industry terms that most people are not familiar with.

8. Use future pacing techniques to persuade

Make people imagine the results they could get from your product/service.

Remember the last time you bought a product that claimed to do something you really desire?

E.g. Get a spotless skin within 7 days of using this facewash

You were like; heck ya, I want spotless skin before ____, I’ma buy this right now.

What’s happening here is; they applied the future pacing marketing tactic on you, and it worked.

9. Agitate the issue to control the emotions

It’s true that people buy because of logic, but in most cases, people buy because of emotions.

So when you agitate the problem they are having, it gets them emotional and makes it easy for them to make an irrational decision quickly based on how they feel in the moment.

This might come off as a shady tactic, but hey—marketing is all about manipulation on a smaller scale. There’s nothing wrong with it. Most fortune 500 companies are using this marketing technique.

Do you regret buying an expensive product? If you do, you bought it because of emotions and later realized it’s not worth the price. Haha, they applied this tactic on you and surprisingly it worked.

10. Create a desire and give hope

Desire: Create a desire in your audience by using tempting claims so that you can capitalize on those evoked emotions by selling something that feeds their desire.

You can try different practices to create a desire in your audience to buy your product/service even if they don’t need it.

Your ad copy shouldn’t feel like a sales pitch to the readers, nobody likes to be sold, so write it in a way that they should feel like you are trying to help them out, that makes them feel like they are buying a solution to their problems.

Hope: Give them hope that whatever they are trying to achieve or solve is 100% possible, give examples to prove it. It helps them boost their confidence and get hyped up to buy.

11. Demonstrate how you’re gonna solve their problems

Demonstrate the exact process of how you are gonna solve their problems in the simplest way possible. If they understand the process, they will be more likely to believe that it’s gonna work out. If they think it’s gonna work out, why wouldn’t they buy? It’s a no-brainer.

12. Add curiosity

Don’t give all the details and information in the post itself, that’s the best way to prevent people from visiting your website.

Add curiosity in your post so that people will visit your link to learn more, then you can capture their contact info and close sales in the follow-up. Put them in a long Email sequence, they will either buy or unsubscribe.

13. Add scarcity

Scarcity is like a cherry on top, it makes everything complete, without it, your ad copy will probably not convert well.

Everyone procrastinates when it comes to trying out new things, so add some scarcity, it will force them to take action ASAP.

People’s biggest fear is missing out, you can exploit it to basically sell anything, lol it sounds evil.

Exclusivity is what sells, people love to be a part of an elite club or something that is not available to the masses.

There are thousands of ways to add scarcity, here’s a most common one:

“We only have 100 copies available, grab it before it’s sold out.”

You can get creative and come up with unique and better ways depending on what you are offering.

When Amazon™ says “There’s only 1 item left.” Do you think they are telling the truth? In most cases, the seller is lying to urge you to make a purchase immediately. The seller fears that you might change your mind anytime soon.

14. Give a clear call to action

Don’t confuse your audience by giving too many ‘Call to actions’. Clearly tell them what they should do, whether they should visit your website, comment or send a message to you.

15. Get people to interact with your post

You must ask something that prompt’s people to comment, it will increase the post reach. Your post will reach a lot of people if it gets a good amount of engagement within a few hours of posting. That increases the chance of your post going viral.

Everyone loves to share their opinion and when you give them a reason to comment, they will comment and help you increase your post reach.

Thanks for reading till this far, here’s a bonus tip only for ya!

16. Add a personal touch to your ad copy

Don’t make your ad copy just a boring text, use Emojis to spice it up.

Put a face on your brand, these days the world prefers to buy from individuals, not from big corporations, that’s why personal branding is boomin’ now, so I’d say show your face to make your promotional post as authentic as it possibly could get.

And the next thing you know, they already trust you because of your distinct personality. Humans are sophisticated creatures, sometimes they just instantly like and trust you based on either your looks, accent, the way of talking, smile, or any other traits. I can keep going on and on, you get the point.
